Ms. Jean-Pierre graduated from St. John’s University with a B.S. in business management and a minor in government. She graduated from the Rutgers School of Law in 2008 in Camden, New Jersey. While in law school, she served as the Articles Editor for the Journal of Law and Public Policy.
Prior to joining Phillips & Associates, Ms. Jean-Pierre was an associate at a firm in Garden City, where her practice emphasized wage and hour and employment discrimination claims in front of federal and state court and administrative agencies. She worked on cases from intake through civil litigation proceedings, including factfinding work, drafting pleadings, conducting and defending depositions and engaging in law and motion and trial practice.
Ms. Jean-Pierre worked for MTA Bridges and Tunnels from September 2017-November 2021 as labor counsel, reporting directly to the Vice President of Labor Relations and participated in Labor/Management meetings and grievance hearings. She collaborated with management and other departments there to give advice about collective bargaining agreement and labor issues. She also appeared on behalf of the Authority in arbitrations. In the course of this work, she argued aggressively and persuasively about contract interpretations. She also drafted briefs to support the Authority’s position on various collective bargaining agreements. Prior to her employment at MTA Bridges and Tunnels, Ms. Jean-Pierre worked for the NYC Administration for Children’s Services and the NYC Department of Education appearing in Family Court and before other administrative bodies. Ms. Jean-Pierre also served as a law clerk in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.
Ms. Jean-Pierre is admitted to practice as an attorney by the New York State Bar, the New Jersey State Bar, as well as the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York and the District of New Jersey. Employment Discrimination Lawyer in New York City
Federal, state, and local laws prohibit employment discrimination in New York City. It can be difficult to know whether what you experienced was severe enough to be considered employment discrimination. When you come to see Ms. Jean-Pierre, or one of our other compassionate employment attorneys, we will ask you questions about what happened to determine whether you have a claim. We understand that it is difficult to go up against your employer, who likely has significant resources, as we aim to make this an easier period for you.
Many of the federal laws under which Ms. Jean-Pierre may be able to seek relief for you are enforced by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). As your attorney, Ms. Jean-Pierre would need to file a charge with the EEOC before pursuing damages in court for violations of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA).
In many circumstances, the New York State Human Rights Law or the New York City Human Rights Law may provide you with greater remedies. The city law, in particular, has long been known as one of the friendliest plaintiff’s civil rights laws in the country. Both laws allow you to recover compensatory damages for adverse treatment due to a wide range of protected traits. These damages could include emotional distress, past and future wage loss, out-of-pocket costs, and more.
In some cases, reinstatement may be possible, but often, by the point of litigation, relationships are too strained between employers and their employees to make that a wise or beneficial move for the employee. We may be able to recover punitive damages for egregious conduct.
